Anyone see Disney’s Mulan? Well here is the real, original deal.
The story, told in the slow-moving, formal and stylized manner of traditional Chinese musical-drama, is one of a young lady, Ivy Ling Po, who wishes to join the army and fight invading barbarians from the North. Her Father, Yang Chi-ching forbids her from doing so, insisting he must uphold the family honor until death, she is a woman, not meant to fight…end of discussion. Undaunted by her father’s threats, Miss Ling Po disguises herself as a young man, and, after soundly triumphing over her father in a mock battle, takes her leave from the village.
She remains in disguise, and soon becomes one of the greatest warriors of Chinese History. The largest obstacle to overcome for her is not the battle itself, but her struggle to convince a Handsome Marshall, Chin Han, that she is a girl.
This inspiring story of Feminine empowerment, strength, and love is enhanced by dramatic landscape, elaborate costume, and delictate, thoughtful camera work. Much of the character dialogue is set to the beautiful style of Chinese opera, and when the charecters aren’t speaking there is a chorus narrating us through.
