Based on a story by Lao She, This Life follows the fortunes of a Beijing policeman and his family through the ups and downs of five decades of modern Chinese history from 1900-1950. War, revolution, corruption, patriotism, and economic turns thread through the family members and into the film. With the family at the fore, This Life evokes the resonant moments of both harmony and discord as a national history unfolds for a single family. Directed by Shi Hui. With Wei He Ling, Shi Hui, Shen Yang, Li Wei, Cheng Zhi. 1950. Black and White. 112 minutes.
