From Jin Yong, the same author made famous by subsequent HK films such as Ashes of Time and Fong Sai Yuk, Ann Hui crafted her own early epic martial arts world drama filmed in the vast open spaces of Mainland China. This serious and compelling story of the complex political and personal conflicts between two brothers, is told in two parts: The Romance of Book and Sword, followed by Princess Fragrance. Emperor Chen Lung of the Ching Dynasty is hounded by his younger brother Chen Jia Lo, chief of the Red Flower Society whose purpose is to oust the ruling Manchus and restore the Ming Dynasty. As Jia Lo heads north to aid the MuslimÕs fight against his brotherÕs government, he falls in love with a chieftainÕs daughter, Princess Fragrance. Inspired by Kurosawa and Peckinpah, Hui re-creates Jin YongÕs world - fantastic yet real, where fighting and action drive the plot forward in a form of heightened reality whose stories are timeless. Both parts directed by Ann Hui. With Da Shi Chang, Zhang Duo Fu, A Yi Nu Wa, Liu Jia.
