Ying Zheng is ChinaÕs very first emperor, and his shadow is long-time friend Gao Jian Li, the most accomplished composer of his era. Their two lives have been tightly bound since birth and as Ying nears his goal of unifying China, they meet again although Gao now wears the brand of a slave. When the emperor wants him to compose a national anthem, Gao takes umbrage at Ying's brutal conquests and refuses. Poetic and masterful, Zhou imbues his film with subtle truths and intimate textures which allow viewers to embrace the story despite its epic proportions. Magnificent performances and superb cinematography have made this an all-time theatre favorite and the longest running in 4 Star history. Directed by Zhou Xiao Wen. With Jiang Wen, Ge You, Xu Qing.
